How much does parquet installation cost on the Costa del Sol? Factors affecting the price
The price per square meter of parquet is an easy comparison point when planning a flooring renovation. However, it only tells part of the story of what the final cost of installation will be.
When budgeting for a floor renovation in your Costa del Sol home, it’s essential to understand what makes up the total cost—and why choosing the cheapest quote is rarely the best decision.
Subfloor preparation plays a key role
Original floors in Spanish homes are rarely perfectly level. Often, you encounter uneven tiled floors, which are unsuitable as a base for parquet. Uneven surfaces can cause parquet boards to “float,” and the movement from walking can stress the joints, leading to breakage and squeaking.
Before installing parquet, the subfloor must meet the required standards:
- Leveling: Sanding or applying leveling compound is often necessary. This is a step that contractors offering the lowest bids frequently cut corners on, which can cause problems later.
- Moisture barrier: Especially when installing on ground floors or new concrete, a moisture barrier is critical. It prevents moisture from rising into the parquet from the subfloor.
Installation method: floating or glued?
Parquet can be installed in two main ways. The chosen method directly affects both price and performance:
- Floating installation:
A faster and cheaper method, where the floor “floats” over an underlay. This is common in lighter renovations, but footsteps may be more audible.
- Glued installation: A more labor-intensive and costly method that requires additional time and materials (adhesives). The result, however, is superior: the floor is quiet, solid underfoot, and durable. Glued floors also conduct heat more efficiently, which is a major advantage for underfloor heating. We recommend this method almost without exception for higher-end projects.
Material waste and finishing with moldings
Professional planning minimizes waste, but 5–15% extra material is always needed for cutting. Costs are also affected by moldings. Common stone or tile moldings in Spain often don’t suit wooden floors. Installing new wooden moldings neatly with mitered corners takes skill and time.
How much does parquet installation cost?
It’s impossible to give an exact price without seeing the property, as subfloor preparation needs vary greatly. Generally, high-quality installation—including leveling, adhesives, and labor—forms a significant part of the budget, but it’s also an investment in the floor’s durability and aesthetic appeal.
When investing in premium parquet, such as Timberwise, make sure it’s installed by a professional who can get the job right the first time. Saving a few hundred euros is rarely worth it and can end up costing more in future repairs.
